Mes Aynak: Tepe Kafiriat, Stūpa courtyard

The Stupas‘ courtyard is located in the southern part of the monastery complex. The main entrance has not been found but the eastern part of the enclosure wall has been built with great care, signifying a monumental entrance. The courtyard consists of eight small stupas surrounding the main stupa. All the stupas were built in diaper masonry which have all been looted. Under the actual platform on which the stupas have been built, another structure can be seen through the looters’ galleries. A previous occupation of the stupas’ courtyard is confirmed by architectural remains. (Nicolas Engel/Omara Khan Massoudi 2011, p. 6-8)
