Bāmiyān Cave E

Cave E is located about 50 meters to the west of the East Giant Buddha, and high above the ground. The cave is completely open to the valley, and it contains the remains of a statue of a seated Buddha and wall paintings surrounding it. Directly over the seated Buddha’s head, on the soffit of the niche, is a central panel containing a deity, that has come to be known as the ‘beau Bodhisattva’. On each side of this central panel are two panels containing seated Buddhas executing various mudras. (Klimburg-Salter 1989, p. 159)
